We can often see human remains as museum objects in museums, galleries and other cultural institutions. However, although most of the listed institutions hold on legal and ethical guidelines, the use of human remains in museums should be carefully considered and balanced with respect for the exhibited bodies and their families, as well as religious and cultural beliefs and the needs of scientific disciplines and cultural heritage. This thesis discusses the history of display of human remains, legal and physical (preventive and curative) protection, and the issue of ethics and the purpose of displaying human remains in museums and other cultural institutions. As part of the thesis, a survey was conducted with the aim of determining the attitudes of the general population in the Republic of Croatia on the ethics of displaying human remains. For the survey, a questionnaire was created that was filled out by 234 respondents. The analysis of the data determined whether different personal variables, such as gender, age, education, work sector/status and religious beliefs, influence attitudes about the ethics of displaying human remains. Although there is a statistically significant difference in attitudes with regard to individual variables, the majority of respondents in the Republic of Croatia have extremely positive attitudes on displaying and curating human remains.
