In this thesis I elaborate on the psychological and communicative aspect of the museum environment. Furthermore I elaborate on how to improve the role of the museum as a mediator of knowledge by carefully utilizing atmospheric tools such as lighting, exhibition design, color, music, sounds and logical movement routes, all with the end goal of enhancing the aspect of a museum's interaction with its visitors in order to make the transfer of information much more intense, varied and available on all sensory levels, with the help of the aforementioned tools. The thesis covers a short historical review of the relationship between museums and atmosphere, from the beginnings of museums up until the contemporary times. It also describes the first concepts of ambient exhibition designs such as the black box and the white cube, and also the emotional and / or didactic character of the exhibitions. The approach on exhibitions and atmosphere of the spaces within them is compared to theater via the terms of narrative and scenography that are mutual to them. The thesis tries to explain the term atmosphere and what it means to a museum visitor and also how the museum environment in itself could potentially affect the final impression of the exhibition. I attempt to demonstrate some examples of the aforementioned concepts and approaches on the organization of the ambient itself utilizing some of my own experiences.
