All known and scientificaly proofed benefits of breastfeeding are particulary important for children with Down syndrom. Breastfeeding is not just an optimal nutrition but a medicine that prevents and cures illness. Breastfeeding provides neccessary phisical contact and abundance of sensory stimlation required for optimal development of the child. The breastfeeding act provides the first oral-motori stimulation required for disociation and regular tonus of the child's jaw, lips and tongue muscles, foundation of the regular feeding, drinking and talking. Breastfeeding has a positive effect on mother's resilience towards stressors and towards the process of child's selfregulation. The results of the survey on breasfeeding experences of mothers of children with Down syndrome (sample of 13 mothers) compered to breastfeeding experiences of mothers in control group (sample of 19 mothers) are presented here. It is shown the children with Down syndrome have decreased possibility to start breastfeeding due to separation from their mothers because of the health problems and segnificant delay of the first latch. Although mothers of children with Down syndrom have positive attitude towards breastfeeding and they express their wish to breastfeed their children, this reasearch shows that they actually had brestfed shorther than they wanted. They are challenged more than mothers in contoll group and yet they don't receive any specific support on breasfeeding their children. They breasfeed their children on demand segnificantly less than mothers in control group. It has been shown that the lenght of breasfeeding of the older child segnificantly related to the lenght of the breastfeeding of subject children which confirms that the positive breastfeeding experience plays a key role in breastfeeding second and every other child, including the child with Down syndrome, regardless of their difficulties. It has been found that the total lenghts of breastfeeding children with Down syndrome is on average 3 months and the mothers in control group 9 months. Based on the obtained results and literature analysis and experience the guidelines are given for mothers of children with Down syndrome, their families and all the involved participants in the support system for families of children with Down syndrome from their birth.
